Exercise: Phases of Research: What is expected of you? 

This exercise will help you develop critical thinking skills, literature review abilities, and the ability to identify research gaps and formulate meaningful problem statements.


Task 1: Identify a Broad Research Area

  1. Analyze UG and PG Syllabi: Carefully examine the courses offered in your undergraduate and postgraduate programs related to your field of interest. This will provide insights into the core topics and emerging trends in the area.

  2. Rank Research Areas: Based on your analysis, select three broad research areas that align with your interests and the current academic and societal landscape. Rank these areas based on their potential scope and impact.

Task 2: Conduct a Literature Review

  1. Utilize Scopus and Web of Science: Use these databases to search for scholarly articles related to your selected research areas. Employ relevant keywords and filters to refine your search.
  2. Analyze Existing Literature: Carefully read the selected articles, paying attention to the research questions, methodologies, findings, and conclusions.

Task 3: Identify Research Gaps

  1. Present Gaps: Identify gaps that have been addressed in the existing literature. These might be areas where previous research has provided partial answers or identified limitations.
  2. Unresolved Gaps: Identify gaps that still need to be addressed. These could be unexplored areas, conflicting findings, or limitations that require further investigation.

Task 4: Formulate a Problem Statement

  1. Leverage Identified Gaps: Use the identified gaps to formulate a clear and concise problem statement. The problem statement should succinctly articulate the issue or challenge you intend to address in your research.
  2. Ensure Relevance: Ensure that your problem statement is directly related to your chosen research area and contributes to the existing knowledge base.

  • Research Area: Sustainable Construction Materials
  • Paper Title: Sustainable Concrete - A Comprehensive Study on the Durability, Mechanical Properties, and Environmental Impact of Recycled Aggregate Concrete
  • Journal name: Sustainable Materials and Technology
  • Gaps Identified:
    • Present Gap: The use of recycled materials in concrete has been explored, but their long-term durability and mechanical properties need further investigation.
    • Unresolved Gap: There is limited research on the environmental impact of using recycled materials in construction, particularly in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.
  • Research Objective: The research aims to investigate the long-term durability and mechanical properties of concrete incorporating recycled materials. Additionally, it will quantify the environmental impact of using these materials in construction, including greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. The study will develop a framework to optimize the use of recycled materials in concrete construction, considering factors like material type, quantity, and mix design. Finally, it will identify barriers to the widespread adoption of recycled materials and propose strategies to overcome these challenges.
  • Problem Statement: To investigate the long-term durability, mechanical properties, and environmental impact of incorporating recycled materials in concrete construction.


Note: Try to compile work from at least 3 good research papers. Make sure the journals considered are indexed.
